Instant Fantasy 3rd Edition is a lightweight fantasy roleplaying system designed from the ground up for solo play with minimal rules overhead and room for creative problem solving. Compatible with most fantasy lands, it’s suited for dungeon crawls, improvised adventures, and games run straight from a notebook.

Inside you’ll find a number of character options, spells, and monsters, along with a concise core rules glossary that can be learned in a single sitting.

Whether you’re chronicling a lone hero’s journey or exploring a dungeon with friends, Instant Fantasy gives you the structure you need to forge new adventures.

SOLO ADVENTURE PRIMED

This system is ideal for solo adventures you can have on the go, be it pencil and paper or on your laptop.  The core rulebook fits on a tablet or smartphone screen and is short enough that you won't have to browse for long to make your rulings.

SRD LEGACY DOWNLOAD

I originally started this project with an pure text system reference document (SRD) for download.  That version still exists on this page as a legacy download, because I promised I'd keep it available.  I have made significant changes since then, so while the SRD content is fully playable, I'd encourage you to download the core rulebook or the Purest Blend, which is essentially a quick-play packet.

This game is free and will always be free.

PRINT MEDIA SOON

This section can't happen until well after the new year, but I have a saddle stitched print copy in the works.  Formatting for print is hard, so I ask for your patience.

DEVELOPER NOTE:

I engineered this system to meet my personal needs running solo adventures for characters I don't often get the opportunity to play at my table.  Over the last 6 months, I've been running personal adventures, having playtests, and sharing my stories with friends. 

I've also been making changes to the core rules to suit my needs and to make it a better system overall.

I'm pleased to say that Instant Fantasy is at a point where I don't foresee many changes to the core rules in the future.  The end of 2025 was probably the biggest overhaul, and that was only achievable thanks to months of play and figuring out the balance of adventure, dice rolls, and dungeon crawls.
