Spell Slots: Explanation

"Spell Points" is an optional rule in Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition.  Instead of spending spell slots to cast leveled spells, casters gain a number of Spell Points dependent on how many of each leveled spell they could cast in the class.

Essentially, spell slots are automatically converted to spell points and each spell costs a certain number of points to cast.

What's so Good About Spell Points?

I won't lie.  It's normally quite tedious.  Subtracting spell points involves some math, about as much as hit points in combat.

However, the wonder of spell points means that your caster can potentially churn out dozens of 1st level spells or even cast several 9th level spells at their max level.  Due to this, Spell Points can be a game defining feature for a character or build.

Why I Made This App

I made this app for much the same reason I make most of my DnD apps, because they help me with the campaigns I'm playing in.  Most of the time, it's my solo games, but in this case, I'm playing an impish Tiefling by the name of Raz at our group's table.  His family and hometown is deeply rooted in the culture of mana, which is different than the fundamentals of normal casters.  I wanted him to cast spells using his mana, so mana points (spell points) was a rule that I pitched to my DM.  He enjoyed it and I promised not to break the game.

Where to Find Spell Points

Many of the optional rules present within the 2014 books for DnD 5th edition were not carried over to the new 2024 books.

If you have the 2014 Dungeon Masters Guide, you can find the optional rules for Spell Points on pages 288-289.

Here is a link to a DnD wiki that breaks down the mechanics:

My app uses these rules and covers just about every caster except the Artificer.
